We had a great day in mid-winter exploring the Awhitu peninsula, visiting the Manukau Heads lighthouse, checking out Orua Bay and Big Bay before finally heading back down the coast where we planned to stay at the Awhitu Reserve campsite overnight.
Unfortunately, the campsite was closed. We could probably have just parked overnight on the public parking area, but we decided to head on back to Waiuku as it was starting to get dark, and I didn't want to risk being asked to be moved on sometime after dark.
UPDATE: December 2014
We returned to the Ahitu Peninsula on a beautiful hot summers day, and this time we were able to have a good look through the campsite..
The camping area is divided into two, with the Brook Homestead on the furthest one, which also overlooks the Manukau Harbour. Both have well maintained long-drop toilets, and provide plenty of shelter and on-grass parking.
This is a really nice regional park. It was quite busy while we were there in the peak summer holiday season, but it would make a peaceful place to chill out in spring, or later on in summer after the holiday silly season is over.
