WEST-COAST: WESTLAND

The Moeraki (Blue) River Gravel Pit is a large gravel parking area with access to the Moeraki River and is available for free overnight parking in self contained vans.

This is really only suitable for keen fishermen, as there is good access to the river, and it is a quiet, back-country location just off the main road.

You could also use it as an emergency stopover if it's getting too late to find somewhere more suitable, like the free DOC parking area at Lake Matheson if you're going north, Going south, you don't have so many free, or low cost, options until you get to the DOC campsite at Pleasant Flat.
