The Strongman Mine Memorial
There is a parking overlooking the west coast beach with a path leading to the Strongman Mine Memorial.
The memorial commemorates the 19 men who were killed in an explosion at the Strongman coal mine at Runanga in January, 1967. The explosion resulted from not following safety regulations when firing a charge in a shot hole.
There were 240 men working at the time, and they were very fortunate that there weren't more deaths. Only 17 of the 19 bodies were recovered before the mine was sealed up.
