The Upper Buller Gorge Scenic Reserve is a DOC campsite set up in the location of the Lyell gold mining town that was active in the late 1800s.
Access to the campsite is on a sealed road, and the large, grassed area is easily accessible. There is a BBQ adn picnic table. Dogs are allowed, but must be under control at all times.
Julius von Haast named the town after Charles Lyell, who promoted the new concept of plate tectonics being the driving force for creating mountains. However, none of the orignal buildings are left, and only the cemetary and the remains of an old gold stamper battery is left.
There are 3 walks that vary from 10 minutes to around 45 minutes that take you to the old cemetary and the Croesus stamper battery.
