The surf club building
The sealed parking area at the Waitarere Beach Surf Club includes public toilets, and is a great location to spend some time at the beach.
It's a long white-sand beach that is very popular over the summer holidays.
There is a memorial plaque to the wreck of the Hydrabad, a sailing ship that ran aground just of this coast in 1878, fortunately without any loss of life.
There was no sign for freedom camping when we visited, but this would be an excellent location. Just be sure to ask at the surf club, or one of the locals, before you do.
