Bruce Road Free Camping

The parking area half-way between Whakapapa Village and Top of the Bruce has been provided by DOC as a Freedom Camping area for self-contained vans.
The rugged landscape is just stunning at this altitude, even with the mountains covered by cloud.
There is plenty of room for large vans, but you'd want to be well insulated if you decide to stay overnight. That is not a problem with our Autotrail, and I would have loved to stay overnight just to see the sunset and the sunrise next morning.
However, a wet front was heading our way, and we needed to get to Ohakune for an Autotrail Users rally, so we continued on up to the cafe, and then back down the mountain. The drizzling rain had already set in by the time we got back on SH47.
