The Tongiriro National Trout Centre is major attraction, featuring a trout hatchery, and underwater viewing area and a nature walk.
We called in while driving south to Waiouru, only having time to stop briefly. You can't park overnight, but it would make for a very interesting few hours learning about New Zealand's trout breeding program, exploring the nature walk, and the walk along the Tongiriro river.
