WAIKATO: SOUTH-WAIKATO

There is a large sealed carpark near the Atiamuri Dam where self-contained motor caravanners can park overnight. 

Our initial impression on arriving was that not that positive. It was a large sealed area, but was visible from the main highway, reasonably exposed, and there would be some traffic noise.

However, on having a look around the main  parking area, I noticed that you could also park directly overlooking the Waikato river, and that the Waikato cycleway also went past, including a track over the bridge.

Our first preference would still be the Atiamuri Marina carpark, but this would be a good backup if that smaller carpark had filled up.

Self-contained caravans and campervans can stay the first two nights free then a camping permit is required for a longer stay. Camping in tents and vehicles requires a camping permit.
