Whangamata enjoys access to two quite different beaches - one is the Beach Road Reserve facing the harbour, and the other is the Esplanade Road Reserve facing the Pacific ocean. Both have their own character and make great locations for motor caravanners to enjoy.
The Esplanade Drive carpark has a large parking area where freedom camping is allowed for certified self-contained motor caravanners.
Unlike most of the council controlled freedom camping sites, this does not have a sign identifying where freedom camping is allowed, which means that you can park anywhere along the parking area. You are limited to a maximum of two days - which is a general restriction the council applies to all freedom camping areas.
