Hawkes Lookout is a Department of Conservation site that has a small parking area where self-contained vans can park overnight. The well maintained walkway to the lookout passes through dramatic water sculpted marble rock formations.
These are formed by the action of rainwater percolating down over the rock, which is later exposed to view as the soil covering the rock is washed away.
The walk to the viewing platform takes around 10 minutes, and provides spectacular views of Tasman Bay and the mountains of the Richmond Range adn the Kahurangi National Park.
There is a small long-drop toilet at the beginning of the walkway.
Overnight parking is limited to between 5 pm and 9 am, and to no more than 4 days in any calendar month. However, the parking area is quite small, and would not be suitable for longer stays. It does make a very interesting stopover on the way to or from Golden Bay.
