Certified self-contained vans can park overnight in any council parking area that is not sign-posted as prohibited.
For complete details check wdc.govt.nz/camping. Check for onsite signs on arrival.
You risk a $200 fine for ignoring the rules.
Whangarei District Council also provides four designated freedom camping areas for self-contained vehicles
as well as 18 sites that permit non self-contained camping options.
Parking spaces and van length are limited at these sites and they are very popular, so be sure to arrive early
if you want to park overnight. We recommend you avoid these during the summer season.

Tamaterau Reserve has a small parking area which is available for overnight camping for a maximum of one night.
It's a nice quiet location off Whangarei Heads Road. The Whangarei District Council have set aside a small area beside the toilets for parking overnight.
Curiously, this is the least practical area to park, as it is on a slope and you may also block off access to the grass parking area behind.
Van size is limited to a maximum of 6 metres.
There is also a community tennis court which you could make use of for a small contribution to the local club. Of course, you'd need to have your own racquets and ball with you.
