Certified self-contained vans can park overnight in any council parking area that is not sign-posted as prohibited.

You risk a $200 fine for ignoring the rules.

Whangarei District Council also provides four designated freedom camping areas for self-contained vehicles
as well as 18 sites that permit non self-contained camping options.
Parking spaces and van length are limited at these sites and they are very popular, so be sure to arrive early
if you want to park overnight. We recommend you avoid these during the summer season.

The Whangarei City Council have made some parking areas available for campervans and caravans in their Ryburn House Lane Carpark.

You are able to park anywhere in the carpark, but are limited to just 4 hours unless you are in the specially marked parks where you can stay overnight for up to 3 days in a month.

Overnight parking is limited, and this is a popular location right on the rivers edge and walking distance from the Marina, cafes and shopping.

If you can't find a motorhome park, there are plenty of other locations in the Whangarei area.
