Whangarei District Council welcomes freedom campers, and provides designated freedom camping locations
for certified self-contained and non-self-contained vans. Parking spaces and van length may be limited
Certified self-contained vans can also park overnight at any council parking area that is not sign-posted otherwise.
There are 38 prohibited sites. Check wdc.govt.nz for the latest information. You risk a $200 fine for ignoring signs.

Pataua North has a small reserve overlooking the harbour inlet where certified self-contained motor caravanners can freedom camp.
Pataua North is a small beach front community, about half an hour drive from Tikipunga, in Whangarei. It would be a nice place to chill out, explore the beach, or go fossicking for mussels at low tide.
There are clean public toilets on the beach, and it's well worth the walk across the footbridge to Pataua South.
