The small community in Whananaki North includes a country store with an outdoor cafe, and is also well known for providing access to the longest footbridge in the southern hemisphere.
The footbridge was built so that children on the south side of the estuary could walk to the school on the north side. Previously, the school teacher had to be row them across twice daily. The footbridge is 395 metres long.
It's next door to the holiday park, providing local access to food and drink. Or you can just call in for a coffee break while stopping to walk across the footbridge, which has become something of a rite of passage for passing visitors.
There's a clean public toilet next to the community centre.
Freedom camping is available at the Whananaki Reserve further along Whananaki North Road. If you're self-contained, you can also overnight at the boat ramp parking area.
