The Matawai Hotel is a magnificent traditional hotel in a small rural community. They have a large parking area that is available for overnight parking in self-contained vans.
We visited on a gloomy wet afternoon, and the hotel wasn't yet open for business. So I contented myself with taking some pictures before continuing on up state highway 2 to Whakatane.
The hotel building itself looked quite impressive, and I'd have been tempted to stay overnight and try out their restaurant. But it was too early in the day for us.
