Lake Wardell is a large reserve surrounding the lake where freedom camping is allowed for self-contained motor caravanners.
This is a stunning location, with views over the lake, or sheltered by the pine trees if too hot. You are well back from the main road, and the reserve extends to the canal, where parking is also available along the road front. Even this parking is sheltered from the road by a large bank.
The only negative is not getting satellite TV reception if parked among the trees.
There is a single long-drop toilet, that is most likely intended for day visitors in cars. You won't need it if self-contained. However, there are also fireplaces and picnic tables for outdoor barbeques and dining.
We enjoyed our stay overnight here, and would happily come back.
UPDATE 30-Mar-18
We did return on our way back from Queenstown, and stayed overnight on the lake side of the reserve. We were treated to a beautifuly sunset as we were finding a nice place to park. The sunrise the next morning was just out of this world!!
