Pohowere Beach has a large parking area where certified self-contained motor caravanners can freedom camp for one night every 28 days, and only from 1 March to 15 August.
This has been set up as a freedom camping area by the Kaikoura District Council. However, it is also close to a colony of endangered dotterels, and there may be restrictions placed on freedom camping in the future.
Pohowere is the Maori name for the Banded Dotterel.
