The carpark at Paparoa Point is in a stunning location overlooking the harbour, but it is no longer really suitable for freedom camping in self-contained vans.
We've enjoyed staying overnight at this location before the Kaikoura earthquake in 2016 destroyed much of this coastline. Paparoa Point is still there, but it is now set up as one of the safe stopping areas and has lost it's wild east coast character in the process. Whlle the entire parking area is now sealed, there are very few places that are level. Overall, we felt disappointed.
