Peketa Beach Carpark is a great place to stop for lunch, and possibly for overnight parking if you're self-contained.
We called in just to check it out. It's a really nice beach, with views north-east to the Kaikoura peninsula. We didn't see any signs forbidding overnightt parking, but it would pay to check with the local council if you want to stay overnight.
