Alternate parking on the other side of the road
The Waioeka Journey, driving north, begins at Opato just north of the boundary between Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty. It's marked by a large roadside parking area.
The Waioeka road was a challenging one to build, and there are a number of roadside rest areas along the way. They are nice places to stop for a break on the long drive from Gisborne to Whakatane, and may be suitable to parking overnight if you're running late and need somewhere to stop.
Apart from being a nice layover, with additional parking on the other side of the road, there is not much else there.
