The Athenree Rest Area is well off the busy highway, and would be suitable for taking a driving break while heading north towards the Karangahake Gorge.
It's not ideal for motor caravanners as the driveway is a bit uneven, and there are only a few places level enough to park comfortably.
There is a lot of road noise, but otherwise is quite ok to stop for lunch, or refreshments. While you could park here overnight, there are much nicer (and quieter) locations in the Western Bay of Plenty.
