Lake Wairarapa is a large lake to the north-east of Wellington, and a large reserve at the northern tip is available for freedom camping in self-contained vans.

We visited on a lovely spring afternoon. However, the lake water was surprisingly muddy looking, which we assumed was because of the heavy rain we had experienced over the previous few days. But, apparently this is normal as the lake is quite shallow, and it is surrounded by farmland, and gets all the runoff as a result.

There were a few other campers when we arrived. It was a nice location - very quiet, if a bit exposed to the wind.

There was a sign indicating that toilets were available, but we didn't get to check them out. They are likely to be pretty basic. There is a boat ramp for accessing the lake.

We stayed overnight before heading north through Masterton on our way to Napier.
