There is a parking area near the end of Waipakihi Rd where self-contained motor caravanners can park overnight.
It's in a quiet, rugged and isolated area about 7 km off the main Desert Road highway. It's a sealed road, but was in bad repair when we drove down it.
It was in mid March and beehives were strategically placed down Waipakihi Road to collect nectar from the flowering manuka in the area.
