Buffalo Beach Reserve is a very large beachfront reserve at the northern entrance to Whitianga.

Whitianga is a prime holiday destination in the Coromandel Peninsula, popular with Kiwis and overseas visitors alike. The reserve would be an ideal freedom camping location for motor caravanners, being right on the beachfront and well off the main road. There is plenty of room on a reasonably level grass surface, and you are just a 15 minute walk from the town centre.

Unfortunately, the reserve is locked at night, and no overnight stays are permitted.

It was this reserve, along with everything else we saw while travelling around the peninsula, that emphasised to us that the Thames-Coromandel District Council still has a long way to go to really welcome self-contained motor caravanners. We really love the Corormandel and really hope that the council will finally recognise that self-contained motor caravanning is growing rapidly, and is now a very important part of the tourism market.
