The tiny community of Pataua is located just over 30 mins drive from Whangarei, up the coast from Whangarei Heads.
Spanning both sides of the Ngunguru Bay inlet, and only connected by a wooden footbridge, it is a location that offers a rural-seaside lifestyle for the local people.
Pataua South is in a sheltered bay, with access to the Pacific ocean through the inlet. Pataua North is right on the ocean beach and is a 15 minute walk over the footbridge from the carpark, or an hours drive.
We only had time to walk over the footbridge and a short distance along the track leading to Pataua North. It was a beautiful sunny winter afternoon, perfect for walking to the beach, but we needed to drive on up to Paihia in time for some business meetings the next day, and we were running out of time.
We could easily imagine spending a couple of days here, exploring both north and south, and maybe doing some fishing.
For us, this is quintessential coastal New Zealand - local people enjoying a great lifestyle and willing to share a little of it with visitors passing through.
