The Horeke Tavern the first tavern ever built in New Zealand, and is an historic icon in a stunning location on the Hokianga Harbour. Overnight parking overlooking the harbour is allowed in self-contained vans.

The tavern slogan "Serving Beer Since 1826" gives you a sense of the history. It looks like a really interesting place to spend an evening, taking in a pub meal, and enjoying the view out over the harbour.

Unfortunately, we arrived just after 9am, which was too early for the tavern to be open, and we had to continue our journey on to Kaitaia. Maybe next time we'll stop over and have a look inside as well.
