The historic Trout Hotel is over 100 years old and was the centre of the Canvastown gold mining area. It has a large camping area behind the hotel.

This is a great base to explore what remains of New Zealand's early gold mining history, and you can follow the original tracks to get some sense of what life would have been like at the time.

Of course, food and drink are available in the hotel.

Please advise if you are bringing pets. Fresh water is only available at certain times in year. You can freedom camp in the reserve for a maximum of 7 nights. A gold coin donation would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, the hotel was closed when we arrived, and we didn't realize that the main camping area was at the back of the hotel. It does look like being an interesting place to stay for a few nights.
