The Kaikoura District Council has now banned all freedom camping on this site
Meatworks is a series of parking areas along the Kaikoura coast where freedom camping is available for self-contained motor caravanners.
The parking areas are spread out over about one kilometer, so there is plenty of room, with a mix of gravel and grass for parking.
The beach is rugged, but it is now one of the few places left along the magnificent Kaikoura coast. It's become popular with surfers, and is a nice place to just chill out well off the main road.
UPDATE 10-Jan-2019
The Kaikoura District Council are requesting that people don't freedom camp here over this summer because there is a health risk from the large amount of human waste left by irresponsible campers.
