Avalanche Creek Shelter is located in Arthurs Pass town, making this a very convenient place to stop overnight. There's a good cafe, and groceries within a short walk.
You can explore the shore or go for longer walks in the park. You need to be prepared for quickly changing alpine weather conditions above the bush line. During winter road access is difficult after snowfalls.
