There is a small parking area before the Rakaia bridge that offers an outstanding view over the Rakaia river as well as access to a walking track down to the waters edge.

It's worth stopping just to enjoy the view, which is all we did when we drove along highway 72 en route to Mt Somers.

Unfortunately, we didn't notice the turnoff to Evans Reserve, where there is a large parking area right on the rivers edge. This looks to be well worth checking out, which we'll do on our next drive this way.

The bridge was completed in 1882, and is listed as an important part of New Zealand's engineering heritage as it typifies the ability of the early settlers to adapt and modify overseas concepts to meet local conditions.
