Parallel parking down the grass verge
Tauranga Airport includes a grass reserve where self-contained motor caravanners can freedom camp as well as providing a public dump station.
We called in to checkout the public dump station, not knowing that the airport also allows freedom camping along the grass verge in front of the PDS. There were also motorhomes parking in the larger reserve on the front corner.
It was being well used, and would be a option if you needed to take a short flight to another location in New Zealand. However, you are limited to just two consecutive nights, so it would only be a short time away.
Other than that, you are spoilt for choice with freedom camping locations in and around Tauranga, and there are nicer places to stay.
The dump station was well designed, and also provides fresh drinking water.
