Locked Public Dump Station
Kawerau is a forestry town just east of Rotorua and sitting at the foot of Mount Putauaki - which makes for a prominent landmark driving into the town.
The Kawerau District Council has made the parking area at the rear of the Bowling Club available to certified self-contained motor caravanners for overnight parking. It is free for the first 3 days, and $10 per day after that, for a maximum of 7 consecutive days.
There is room for up to 4 vans, and power outlets are also available from the i-Site across the road.
When we were there, the dump station was locked, and had a sign advising that you can get the keys from the information centre across the road. This is the first time we've seen a locked dump station, and really wonder why that should be necessary.
It shouldn't be a problem, especially if you want to plug into the power as well. However, you will need to arrive during normal working hours.
There is a short walk at the back of the parking area which passes over a river in a bush setting.
Parking is also available in front of the swimming complex, which offers access to a free swimming pool.
Overall, it is a nice quiet location and provides visitors a chance to get to know Kawerau.
