AUCKLAND: HIBISCUS COAST

Sandspit Holiday Park is a traditional 'Kiwi style' campsite, with a quirky, historical layout, and located on the Kawau Bay harbour.

This is a totally laid back environment. The facilities were clean, but there was no pretense about being upmarket. The historic displays featured in most of the buildings looked somewhat uncared for, but that didn't dent the enthusiasm of Kiwi campers who regularly come here. We have some friends who come up each summer from the Kapiti Coast, just to chill out and enjoy the environment.

There are a lot of chalets, with many of them having long term residents who come back throughout the year, and often have boats stored ready for use.

This is pretty much fully booked over the summer holiday period, and there are only a few beachfront powered sites. So, if that's what you'd like, it would pay to book ahead of time.

There are fishing charters, boat cruises, or the ferry trip to Kawau Island, if you're looking for something to do.
