Hamiltons Gap gives you access to the West Coast beach near the top of the Awhitu Peninsula. There is a large grass area where self-contained vans can park overnight.
We visited mid-week during the Christmas holiday season, and were surprised to find how many vans were in the freedom camping area, as well as day visitors in the carpark.
It was a nice clear day, but the west coast beach was pretty wild. Some hardly souls were fishing, surf-casting out over the breakers.

The access road to the beach is a good sealed road, and passes through farmland. On the way we were stopped and waited while a farmer was moved his dairy herd across the road.
