Little Waikawau Reserve provides freedom camping with stunning beachfront views over the Firth of Thames for self-contained motor caravanners.
While it is only just off the main road, we decided to stay for the night, and didn't find the traffic noise to be too bad. Plus we were treated to a really nice sunset.
You can forage for green lipped mussels on the beach, with a limit of 25 per person per day. However, be careful of the water as it's not really a safe swimming beach.
You need to be certified self-contained and park between the council signs to freedom camp, or you risk a $200 fine.
