Waiomu Domain is a small beachfront domain where self-contained motor caravanners can freedom camp.
It's a nice quiet location, reasonably well back off the main road. It has a stony beach, but we quite enjoyed watching one of the local fishermen bringing in his dinner.
You need to park between the freedom camping signs if staying overnight. You have a maximum of 2 days, and have to leave before 9am on the day that you are leaving. If you are not certified self-contained, then you risk a $200 fine from the local council.
The grass can become soft when wet, so be careful, especially with front-wheel drive vans. There is alternative all-weather parking in the Old Waiomu Campground carpark across the road.
