Flaxmill Bay Hideaway proved to be another one of those unexpected surprises. They are not currently listed in the NZMCA directories, so we only noticed them as we were driving past on the way to Ferry Landing. We had booked into the Cooks Beach Resort overnight, but decided to come and have a quick look at Flaxmill Bay before heading back down the coast.
We met John and Wendy as we parked in front of reception and ended up spending over an hour chatting, swapping experiences, comparing notes on motorhomes, as well as the type of guests who come to stay with them.
Like Cooks Beach Resort, Flaxmill Bay Hideaway is providing a more up-market camping experience, offering modern, very clean facilities, including newly refurbished chalets as an option to the powered sites. The difference is in the landscaping - beautiful mature trees laid out in a park environment, with large stone sculptures placed throughout the garden.
We were there in autumn just after the Easter holiday weekend. All the guests had gone so we had the park to ourselves as we had a walk around. Some of the deciduous trees were just starting to change colour. Autumn is a nice time to visit.
There is no swimming pool, but Flaxmill Bay provides safe swimming just across the road. And the ferry to Whitianga is just a few minutes down the road.
Flaxmill Bay Hideaway is one of the most expensive campsites that we have seen to date, but they are attracting guests who appreciate the gardens and park setting, and are willing to pay a little more.
Our take is that this is a must visit, to be included along with freedom camping and staying at cheaper campsites as part of an overall holiday. John and Wendy will make you feel very welcome, and we definitely plan to return.
