Uruwhenua Reserve is just off the main road as you're coming down the Takaka hill. Freedom camping is allowed for self-contained motor caravanners.
Freedom camping is permitted in the carpark area between the bridge and the Reserve bollards. It is not permitted behind these bollards within the Reserve.
This is a nice location to take a break after driving over the Takaka hill. There is access to the river.

Surprisingly quiet, both cell networks are poor, so maybe thats why.
