The Makarora Blue Pools are accessed from large parking area on the side of the Makarora-Lake Hawea road.  A 15 minute walk through the forest takes you to the blue pools, which get their name from the distinctive blue of the light refraction on the clear, snow-fed, icy cold water.

You can also see large rainbow and brown trout swimming in the pools, especially during autumn and winter when they migrate up the Makarora River from Lake Wanaka to spawn.

If you've got plenty time, and the energy, you can continue on for another 6 km to the Young River Mouth - takes about  1.5 to 2 hours.
