There is a lakefront reserve just off the main Ohau road where self-contained motor caravanners can freedom camp.
We visited on a sunny Autumn afternoon, and the view over the lake was just stunning. This is a great alternative to the DOC campsite at Lake Middleton, which is just a little further up the main road.
The grass driveway is easily missed as you're driving along the main road, but it's well worth stopping to check it out.
