The Otamarakau Sandpit Reserve used to be used by the rail service for collecting sand, and is now set up as a low cost campsite located right on the beach.
It is quite a large campground, with plenty of room for large vans. All parking is on grass, and the beach is just a short walk over the sand dune.
At $5 per van per night, this is an excellent, low cost location for beach activities, fishing, or just chilling out.
However, it is only for self-contained vehicles, and their are no facilities provided apart from the parking area.
A significant negative is the trains running past - both day and night.
There is a campsite manager at the entrance.
