The Waioeka River
The Oponae rest area along the Waioeka Journey features the Ngati Ira who settled in this area from the 1860 onwards. They also helped in the construction and maintenance of the road.
The information plaques also describe some of the history of Te Kooti, one of the great Maori leaders, prophets and military tacticians of the 19th century.
Now, there is a bridge across the river and Oponae Lodge offers accommodation and meals on the other side.
