The Waihi Beach community have embraced the motorhome-friendly programme, and offer no less than seven free locations for overnight parking, in addition to the 5 holiday parks and other low cost parking locations.

Island View Reserve is along the main Beach Road, and provides a modern, high-tech toilet, a public dump station, potable water for topping up tanks, and a walkway to the beach.

We visited in mid-winter, and the weather was cold and blustery, so we stayed for long enough to take some pictures before moving on to the next location.

While it is a pretty location, with the beach on one side and some up-market properties across the road, it is a lttle noisy with traffic along the busy road. However, in the middle of the summer holiday season, when all the other places are full, this would still be a good location to overnight and explore the beach.

We stayed here one night and hiked over the dunes to the beautiful beach. You can walk along the beach to the north or south and even get to the town. If walking at low tide you may be able to travel solely along the beach to town, otherwise you’ll need to head inland. The site for parking is a bit small for our 7m vehicle, but we were able to park by backing in the space and all four wheels were in the marks area. However, the back end extended over the bike path, especially with our bikes on the back of the van.
