The Freedom Camping Trial is now finished, and you might not be able to stay at this location
The Council is presently reviewing their Freedom Camping Bylaw which will hopefully be completed in 2019
Picnic area beside the roadside parking
There is a roadside parking area in Mercer, along the Waikato river, where self-contained motor caravanners can park overnight for free.
It is next to the Irish Pub, with a restaurant and lounge bar, should you want to take a break from preparing meals. There is also a Mobil service station for refueling.
UPDATE: 3-May-2020
We just received this message from the Mercer Communitee Committee:
"The riverside parking a top old wharf is no longer available, there has been subsidence and the parking area is fenced off, it is to be turned into a grassed picnic area with tables, the parking is now just past the old wharf where campers could park.
We are looking at putting in a RV parking spot with kitchen/toilets etc in the future"
